Many of us at times fall victim to America's fast food culture; however, what is the toll on our bodies?  Thankfully, Michele Menzel sat down with us this month to talk about just that!  A doctor of Naturopathy, Michele has not only delineated the food choices that might be causing us harm but has also pointed us in the direction of some healthier options, options that may contribute to a healthier weight, increased energy and joy.

LMS News: How would you describe your work?

Michele: As a Naturopathic Doctor, my goal is to teach/assist my clients in creating energy for balanced living. The body is energetic, so addressing it energetically is the natural way to create balance! My Seven Laws of Wellness were created to help maintain balance in the body, mind and spirit. Lifestyle changes such as nutrition, hydration, detoxification, exercise, rest, sunshine and a strong faith will help you accomplish a healthful life.

In my practice, I use an amazing bio-energizing, balancing tool called Spectra Vision. The Spectra Vision is unparalleled in its ability to isolate the issues and blocks that are most critical for you to address. The system provides detailed lists which the computer collects from your body's biofeedback analysis. All of this information is used to determine where your health problems (imbalances) may be originating. Once we review the results together, specific natural remedies are manually tested to determine exactly what your body will need to normalize (balance) and heal.

LMS News: On your website you talk a lot about the benefits of a well balanced body, what would this look like, or how would it function better, and what are we doing in our daily lives to upset this balance?

Michele: A well balanced body will have energy and vitality well into old age. We will have a healthful glow, live happily and walk in love not fear (perfect love casts out fear). It will function better by handling life situations, along with preventing illness from occurring in the body. Because the body was created to heal, a well balanced body will provide the perfect opportunity for healing to occur. 

There are many things we are doing in our daily lives to upset homeostasis or balance. Major imbalances in the body are caused by the typical American diet. Everything in the universe has a frequency or energy. A diet of pure whole foods will give the body energy to maintain proper balance! So, we should eat food that was created for the body in order for the body to have energy and balance. If you live a mostly sedentary lifestyle, or are often "stressed out", then you are not following the laws of nature and nature's God and therefore you will lack balance. Our bodies were created to move. So, daily exercise is of the utmost importance. Likewise, resolving conflicts as soon as possible and having an outlet to release stress will assist the body in balance. In addition, staying up late will cause the body to become imbalanced, while allowing the body good rest will assure the opportunity to heal and rejuvenate energy.  These are just a few examples of what will upset balance in the body.

LMS News: What are the biggest foods or food behaviors that contribute to this imbalance?

Michele: I would say the biggest food culprits that contribute to imbalance in the body are refined, processed, dead or devitalized foods. Unfortunately, our grocery stores are filled with them. Devitalized food has no nutritional value, is foreign to the body and will bring the energy of the body down, not to mention causing deficiencies, hormonal imbalances and mood changes. Food such as white flour products, white sugar products (including artificial sweeteners), high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated/partially hydrogenated oils, dairy products that have hormones and antibiotics and are ultra pasteurized and homogenized, are not beneficial for the energetic body.  So called energy drinks are especially dangerous to the body.

LMS News: How can we get back on track?  What are the foods or food behaviors that would aid us in reaching or maintaining this balance?

Michele: Foods pure, whole, alive and dense in nutrition will get the body back on track!  This includes:

  • Foods free of pesticides, hormones and antibiotics
  • Locally grown foods and especially organic foods are known to be up to 60% higher in nutritional value (For this we can grow some of our own food, like vegetables, or buy locally grown fruits and vegetables at our local farmer's market.  You can also buy organic fruits and vegetables at grocery and health food stores.)
  • Foods perfect in balance of omega 3 fatty acids like, grass fed beef, organic free range chicken, organic free range eggs, and wild caught fish
  • Foods high in fiber like, whole grains such as brown rice, millet, and spelt (Spelt is one of the healthiest grains that date back to the book of Exodus in the Bible.)
  • Goat dairy products are also highly beneficial to the body. Raw goat milk, yogurt and kefir are alive and high in enzymes, probiotics, vitamins and minerals.

These foods are energizing to the body, will nourish the body and ultimately keep the body in balance. Oh, and don't forget pure water, green and herbal teas are also highly beneficial. Again, this is but a few of the most dense, nutritious foods that will help bring balance to the body.

LMS News: What are the benefits to living this way?

Michele: The benefits of living life this way are having more joy, energy and better sleep, just to name a few. Here we've talked mainly about food. However, it is also important to address the body as a whole: body, mind and spirit. As we make changes to our lifestyle, we will reap the benefits of preventing "dis-ease" in the body; we will have more energy and live well into old age. I love studying different cultures, and those that are living a natural life are living well into their 100's, still living on their own and enjoying life with family and friends!!

LMS News: Is there anything else you would like to share?

Michele: Since we have been raised in modern America on the typical American diet, these changes may seem overwhelming. Change isn't easy, but it is more than worth it when it means a HEALTHY, BALANCED body able to enjoy life, family and friends!! Apply these principles a little at a time and you will be amazed how well the body responds. Food was created to be our medicine and the body was created to heal itself. Giving the body what it needs and living according to nature and nature's God allows the body to maintain homeostasis or balance. Shouldn't we take care of ourselves by giving our body what it needs!!! There is so much more I would love to share with all of you. Unfortunately we have lost generations that really know how to care for the body naturally. However, my own health journey has given me a passion and has led me to teach and ultimately be a resource guide of information. I hope you will give me the opportunity to help you help yourself.
